Lecce is called the Florence of the south, for its architectural features, typically seventeenth century. Lecce lives from prehistory, to the first civilizations, to the Middle Ages, to the Baroque, in the full of the traditions that are handed down until today.
The city has very ancient origins. It has crossed, over the centuries, two periods of prosperity. The first, is that of the Roman era. The second, later, is that of the Kingdom of Naples. It was in this period that Lecce saw a great development in the construction of buildings, monuments and palaces. All of them characterized by a sumptuous architecture and rich in ornamental details, so much to be defined Lecce Baroque. Unique because it took shape in the local stone, ductile and easy to inlay, the Lecce stone.
A visit to Lecce can start from Piazza Duomo, with the Cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace and the Seminary Palace. Not far away, there is Piazza Sant'Oronzo, with the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre. Just behind the square, we find the Castle of Charles V. It is a typical defensive construction. As already evident from the external architecture. The interior, on the contrary, has a refined and elegant style. There is also the Basilica of Santa Croce, to be visited, and its monumental facade. It is an expression of the skill of the master stonemasons, who skillfully have been able to shape the stone of Lecce.
Lecce is not a city that overlooks the sea, but it is certainly not lacking. In fact, the city is located a short distance from both the seaside resorts of the Adriatic and the Ionian. Like San Cataldo, Frigole, Torre Chianca, Torre Rinalda, Casalabate. The Adriatic coast is characterized by imposing rocky walls alternating with small and characteristic bays with crystal clear waters.
