I piani superiori dell’edificio, in particolare, mostrano ancora tutti i tratti tipici delle dimore signorili: pavimenti in legno, travi in legno decorate, soffitti a cassettoni, camini monumentali in pietra incisa, mobilio d’epoca e tanti piccoli dettagli che contribuiscono al fascino dell’edificio.
Dalla torre quadrata si può ancora oggi accedere allo splendido camminamento che corre tutto attorno al castello. Ristrutturato dal De Andrade, il camminamento mantiene praticamente intatto l’aspetto del XIV secolo, con pavimentazione continua e caditoie difensive, e offre un panorama straordinario sul paesaggio circostante. Le torri circolari sono accessibili dal camminamento e tramite scala si può raggiungere la cima di ognuna di esse.
La cappella che si trova nel cortile della fortezza presenta varie tracce di affreschi risalenti al XV secolo. Il fronte laterale meridionale conserva una pittura raffigurante San Cristoforo, attribuita al pittore Giacomino da Ivrea, e la Madonna del latte con bambino. L’interno, costituito da un’unica navata (o aula) conserva affreschi con le Storie dei Santi: sulla sinistra si trova Santa Margherita in preghiera col Drago, al centro Santa Liberata con i santi Servasio e Protasio e a destra Santa Lucia. Il monumento presenta numerose potenzialità in quanto all'interno è presente un ciclo decorativo di affreschi originali in corso di studio.
Tutto attorno al castello si stendono poi circa 6,6 ettari di terreno, coperti in varia misura da prati, campi e boschi rigogliosi che scendono lungo il fianco della collina.
Particolarmente caratteristico è il viale di accesso alla fortezza che serpeggia lungo il fianco della montagna a partire da una comoda area parcheggio situata poco sotto il castello vero e proprio. Il percorso, racchiuso da mura merlate con camminamento, prosegue in salita fino al portale principale del castello che dà accesso al cortile.
Il paese di Montalto Dora dista circa 2 km dal castello e offre tutti i servizi necessari. Altre città storiche del Nord Italia e rinomate destinazioni sciistiche sono raggiungibili in meno di due ore di auto.
Il castello è inserito in un contesto paesaggistico straordinario: il territorio canavesano è un unicum in termini di interesse geologico e naturalistico, portando ancora evidenti tracce delle glaciazioni con la presenza della montagna morenica detta Serra d’Ivrea e dei cinque laghi (tra qui quelli balneabili Sirio, Nero e Pistono) che costellano la zona e costituiscono un sito d’interesse comunitario.
Il castello, grazie all’ottimo stato conservativo, è la cornice perfetta per eventi, matrimoni, convegni e incontri aziendali. In passato il castello è stato anche usato come location per film ambientati nel medioevo, tra cui lo sceneggiato La Freccia Nera (ispirato all’omonimo romanzo di Robert L. Stevenson) del 2006.
Un’altra possibile alternativa è quella di convertire il castello in un resort di lusso.
DESCRIZIONE DELL'IMMOBILE
Il castello (2.030 m², 9 camere e 11 bagni) si struttura su vari piani sfalsati che seguono l’andamento dello sperone roccioso sottostante e si snodano attorno a un grande cortile centrale pavimentato (oltre 400 m²). I livelli sono collegati da quattro comodi ascensori.
Al piano più basso si trovano le antiche cantine, con soffitti in legno e pavimenti in pietra: in questo locali sotterranei è ben visibile la roccia a cui è ancorato il castello. Al piano terra, tutto attorno al cortile pavimentato centrale, si trovano invece varie sale e saloni, una sala da pranzo con cucina, servizi igienici e un ufficio. Quest’ultimo locale doveva in passato fungere da posto di guardia, trovandosi proprio a ridosso del portone principale del castello.
In posizione leggermente rialzata, sopra la cucina e al primo livello della torre quadrata, si trovano invece due camere con bagno en-suite (entrambe accessibile da una scala esterna direttamente dal cortile del castello).
Salendo al piano nobile troviamo poi un grande salone con camino, una sala d’angolo sempre con camino, tre camere con bagno privato (una di queste nella torre quadrangolare) e due grandi biblioteche con annessa sala lettura.
Al secondo piano trovano posto tre soggiorno/salotti e tre camere con bagno en-suite (una situata sempre all’interno della torre quadrangolare).
Infine, salendo ancora all’interno della torre quadrangolare, si raggiunge l’ultima camera, sempre con bagno en-suite, che gode di una vista spettacolare sulle montagne e le valli circostanti.
In un angolo del cortile principale si trova poi la cappella medievale (90 m²) con affreschi risalenti al XV secolo e la relativa torre campanaria.
In un angolo del castello, accessibile tramite scala da un cortile secondario, si trova l’alloggio del custode (75 m², 2 camere e 2 bagni), strutturato su due piani e composto di soggiorno con cucina e bagno al livello inferiore, due camere e bagno al livello superiore.
Un secondo castelletto (220 m²) si trova a breve distanza dal castello principale ed è costituito da vari locali attualmente usati come deposito che si affacciano su una spaziosa corte interna. Questo edificio era probabilmente usato in passato come alloggio per gli ospiti in visita al castello.
In posizione defilata sotto il castello si trova poi una vecchia cascina (110 m²) da ristrutturare e strutturata su due piani che vengono attualmente usati come depositi. Trovandosi lungo il pendio, l’edificio presenta accessi diretti a entrambi i livelli.
Il castello si presenta come un quadrilatero (circa 180 m di perimetro) con quattro torri circolari agli angoli. Il mastio quadrato permetteva di avere una visione completa dei laghi d’Ivrea e garantiva il controllo sulla valle. I saloni interni della fortezza sono stati tutti ristrutturati mantenendone pressoché inalterato l’aspetto ripristinato dal De Andrade. In anni recenti, lavori di manutenzione frequenti hanno permesso di preservare il castello in ottimo stato. Questi interventi hanno ripristinato ovunque necessario gli intonachi interni, i pavimenti in coccio pesto, pietra e legno che caratterizzavano originariamente il castello. In leicht erhöhter Position, über die Küche und auf der ersten Ebene des quadratischen Turms, befinden sich zwei Zimmer mit Ensuite-Bad (beide über eine Außentreppe direkt vom Schlosshof zugänglich).
Im ersten Stock des noblen Bereichs befindet sich dann ein großer Salon mit Kamin, ein Eckraum ebenfalls mit Kamin, drei Zimmer mit privatem Bad (eins davon im quadratischen Turm) und zwei große Bibliotheken mit anliegendem Leseraum.

Schließlich, beim Aufstieg innerhalb des quadratischen Turms, erreicht man das letzte Zimmer, ebenfalls mit Ensuite-Bad, das eine spektakuläre Aussicht auf die Berge und die umliegenden Täler bietet.

Vom quadratischen Turm kann man heute noch den herrlichen Wehrgang betreten, der sich rund um das Schloss erstreckt. Zwischen 14. und 15. Jahrhundert restauriert, bewahrt dieser Gang fast vollständig das Aussehen des 14. Jahrhunderts, mit durchgehender Pflasterung und Verteidigungs-Scharten, und bietet einen außergewöhnlichen Blick auf die Umgebung. Die runden Türme sind vom Wehrgang aus zugänglich und über eine Treppe kann man die Spitze jedes Turms erreichen.
