Botanical garden of Toscolano Maderno Toscolano Maderno Paper Museum History: Since the Lombard era, the area has been part of the court of the Monastery of San Colombano del Priorato di Bardolino and of the priory of Solarolo (Manerba del Garda), dependent on the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio (PC) and of the great monastic fiefdom of Bobbio . The monks evangelized the area favoring the expansion of trade, agriculture (especially the vine and the olive tree), the fishing system, and culture, introducing important innovations and opening trade routes. Toscolano, in particular, boasts Roman origins, evidenced by the remains of a large villa of which, today, parts of the mosaic floor can be seen and which would have been owned by the Roman consul Marco Nonio Macrino. The parish church of Toscolano, founded in 1571 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was for a long time the summer seat of the diocese of Brescia. It contains an important pictorial cycle of the Venetian artist Andrea Celesti.
In the final part of the valley of the Toscolano river, since 1300 the paper industry has developed, among the first and most important places in Europe. For this reason, this stretch of valley is called "Valle delle Cartiere". As evidence there is a document dated 17 October 1381 which has as its object the agreement between the municipalities of Maderno and Toscolano (then divided) with which the rules for the division and use of river waters are fixed at nine points. I monaci evangelizzarono il territorio favorendo l'espansione dei commerci, dell'agricoltura (specie la vite e l'olivo), del sistema di pesca, e della cultura, introducendo importanti innovazioni ed aprendo vie commerciali.
Toscolano, in particolare, vanta origini romane, testimoniate dai resti di una grande villa di cui, oggi, si possono vedere parti di pavimento decorato a mosaico e che sarebbe stata di proprietà del console romano Marco Nonio Macrino. La chiesa parrocchiale di Toscolano, fondata nel 1571 e dedicata ai santi Pietro e Paolo, fu per lungo tempo sede estiva della diocesi di Brescia. Essa contiene un importante ciclo pittorico dell'artista veneziano Andrea Celesti. Nella parte finale della valle del fiume Toscolano, a partire dal 1300 si è sviluppata l'industria della carta; tra i primi e più importanti luoghi in Europa. Per questo tale tratto di valle è chiamato "valle delle Cartiere". Come testimonianza esiste un documento datato 17 ottobre 1381 che ha come oggetto la convenzione tra i comuni di Maderno e Toscolano (allora divisi) con la quale si fissano in nove punti le norme per la suddivisione e l'utilizzo delle acque del fiume.
